No more social networking during office hours in UK!

Thousands employees in several UK companies are being strictly instructed not to use Web 2.0 sites, especially Facebook due to the perception that the use of social networking sites has nothing to do with productivity of the companies. Australia-based telecom giant Telstra is also keeping away its 49,000 employees from access to Facebook. Thus, we may raise here a simple question – Is the use of social networking sites just wastage of time? Interestingly, Facebook has registered more than 3.2 million users in UK. Most of them spend at least 191 minutes in a month on Facebook engaging in social activities, like discussion, messaging, checking up friends, etc. Facebook may have created a common platform for the people to share their ideas on a particular issue which affects their lives, but using it during working hours wastes time and disturbs work culture. But imposing ban is not the permanent solution. The ban may shrink the popularity of social networking sites in general and Facebook in particular. Instead of imposing ban, it is better to allow the workers to access web 2.0 sites during the recess hours. Social networking may also reduce work pressure. Can we deny it? Image
